Description
Just like people, all clowns are not the same. Each clown has a distinct personality and makeup is one way to express these unique differences. Clowns (especially the circus variety) are often very larger than life characters. Makeup can be used to exaggerate facial features (eyebrows, mouth, wrinkles) and certain expressions. If you're a curious clown that finds everything new and exciting, you might want to emphasize your eyebrows and draw them above your real eyebrows so that they always look raised. Likewise, if you're a sad clown, there are ways to extend the lines of your mouth and make it look like you're always frowning. There is a rich history of how the different make up applications got developed. A brief synopsis can be read here: http://www.allaboutclowns.com/ty.
